Purity culture promised us that if we saved sex for marriage, we would be blessed. Blessed with certain marriage. Blessed with a happy marriage. Blessed with a hot sex life.
But decades after the 80s and 90s, those of us who grew up in evangelicalism know the truth. You don’t find a partner only by following the rules and great sex doesn’t just happen.
You’ve known the pain of dysfunctional marriages. You saw your friends get divorced. You’ve been single longer than you expected. You watched the leaders of the movement disown it while walking away with its financial gains. You saw the way the same people who condemned premarital sex from the pulpit, supported abusers in secret.
But more than anything else, you’re facing the reality that purity culture and its leaders never wanted you to see.
You have a life. It is yours to live.
Where will you go from here?
Deconstructing Purity culture isn’t enough. The era of purity rings and True Love Waits pledges may be over, you could stand around the fire of a burnt down house warming your hands, or you can rebuild.
That’s where we come in. Where Do We Go From Here? is a podcast untangling sexual ethics for a new generation of Christians. We aren’t building a house. You are. But we want to equip you with psychological insights and sound theological framing that you can use as tools to build your own place.
I’m Devi Abraham, a former journalist and writer, a wife and a mom.
I’m Jessica Van Der Wyngaard, a filmmaker with a masters degree in theology and dating experience.
We have big questions. Are we the sum total of our bodies or our sexual decisions? To whom do we belong? Are we a quantity that can be used up? What fears created this movement and allowed it to thrive? Why was it so central to the evangelical experience?
The conversation around sexual ethics is urgent, and we hope that you will do this hard, holy work using our podcast as a guide with your people, your community, exactly where you are. We hope this content will equip you with tools to build a house that belongs to you.
We hope that you will ask your people, “Where do we go from here?” We hope you will take each other’s hands and walk forward together.
